Bagh Chal
🐯 Bagh-Chal 🐐
Bagh-Chal 0.1is a digital adaptation of one of the most famous traditional board games from South Asia. Often referred to as "Moving Tigers" or "Tigers and Goats," this version brings the ancient strategy game into the modern browser with a vibrant, nature-inspired aesthetic.
The Origins of Bagh-Chal
Bagh-Chal is the national game of Nepal and has been played for centuries throughout the Himalayas and India. It is an asymmetrical strategy game, meaning the two players have different pieces, different numbers of pieces, and entirely different objectives.
Historically, the game was often played by drawing the grid in the dirt and using stones of different sizes or colors to represent the tigers and goats. It is celebrated for its deep tactical complexity despite having very simple rules.
How to Play: Rules and Strategy
The game is played on a $5 \times 5$ grid consisting of 25 intersections (nodes) connected by lines.
1. The Setup
The Tigers (🐯): One player controls 4 Tigers, which start at the four corners of the board.
The Goats (🐐): The other player controls 20 Goats. At the start of the game, no goats are on the board.
2. Phase 1: Placement
The Goats always move first. In the first phase, the Goat player must place all 20 goats, one by one, onto any empty intersection on the board. During this phase, the Tigers can move or jump to capture goats, but the Goats already on the board cannot move yet—they can only be placed.
3. Phase 2: Movement and Capture
Once all 20 goats have been placed, they can begin moving one step at a time along the lines to an adjacent empty spot.
Tiger Movement: Tigers can move one step to an adjacent empty spot along any line.
Tiger Capture (The Jump): A Tiger can capture a Goat by jumping over it into an empty space directly behind it. Captured goats are removed from the board.
Goat Movement: Goats cannot jump or capture tigers; their only defense is to move in groups to "trap" the tigers.
4. Winning the Game
| Player | Objective |
| Tigers 🐯 | Capture 5 Goats to win the game. |
| Goats 🐐 | Surround and "trap" all 4 Tigers so they have no legal moves or jumps left. |
Technical Features of Version 0.1
This digital version provides a clean, user-friendly interface with several modern enhancements:
Dual Modes: Support for 1 Player (vs AI) and 2 Players (local PvP).
Intelligent AI: The built-in "Computer" player for the Tigers uses logic that prioritizes captures whenever a jump is available.
Visual Feedback: The game includes a "Sky Blue" and "Grass Green" theme, with idle-bounce animations for the goats and clear highlights for valid moves and jumps.
Mobile Optimized: The application includes specific "touch-action" logic and oversized hitboxes to make it easy to play on smartphones and tablets.
Whether you are playing as the stealthy Tigers trying to thin the herd or the Goats working together to corral the predators, Bagh-Chal 0.1 offers a faithful and engaging recreation of this Himalayan classic.
